I didn't realize how I would actually miss certain things I grew up with in South Florida when I moved to Michigan. Rain is the one that has surprised the most. Rain meant tropical depressions, thunderstorms, hurricanes at the very worst. Cloudy days left me somber. I wanted nothing more than to get away from all the "stupid" rain.
I was a public transportation kinda gal in FL. Since I was stuck with taking the bus and rail system for a good 4 years, I saw rain as the enemy which forced me to tote a large umbrella every day. Rain meant puddles. Rain meant there was the off chance to get splashed by the car who was going too fast in rainy weather. Pedestrains be damned! I'm sure more than one of those cars went out of their way to cover me in muck and water. The other almost equally sucky thing was forgetting my umbrella and being caught in the rain without any awning or store to duck into. That amounted to a whole day of class followed by work with soggy clothes. Ick.
Without rain though, you don't get to see too many rainbows. I don't think I saw one the whole 7 years I was in, as Unfriendly's dad calls it, the frozen tundra of Michigan.
The afternooons this past week have been rainy. I've gotten to see some pretty amazing rainbows on my drive home. I took these pictures on 8/29. Alas, they are camera phone pictures. My little Motorola camera didn't quite do this beautiful rainbow justice.
You can see it very well in this first picture.

The second picture shows the upper arc in the clouds but it's very hard to tell.

I was so overjoyed when I saw this rainbow. Luckily, I was at a stoplight so I was able to appreciate it for a minute and snap some hurried shots. A little further on my drive home, I actually got to see the full arc, but since I didn't get a stop light, I couldn't take a picture. I did however, have a flash back to an almost forgotten time.
In first grade, my class had to sing a song about rainbows for something or another...probably some talent show. I still remember the song. It goes like this:
Red and yellow and pink and green
Purple and orange and blue
you can sing a rainbow,
sing a rainbow,
sing a rainbow too.
Listen with your eyes,
Listen with your ears,
and sing everything you see,
you can sing a rainbow,
sing a rainbow,
sing along with me.
Red and yellow and pink and green,
Purple and orange and blue,
you can sing a rainbow,
sing a rainbow,
sing a rainbow too!
I actually found a midi for this
here. It was stuck in my head all throughout the rest of my drive home, which wasn't full of angst (for a change).
